I think it's easier to cull down and sort video clips separately from photos. After selecting which video clips you want to keep from the year, send them all to iMovie. From there you can trim down and export into a home movie. Vimeo is an option to make movies as well if you don't have Apple products.

Be sure to record all video clips in horizontal orientation!
